In a work that spans several years and finds hope in questioning the nature of endings, Trans Memoria finds filmmaker Victoria Verseau immersing herself in her own transgender history in order to find her path forward. Alongside Aamina and Amelia, two women on their own different transition journeys, Verseau unpacks her past relationship with a departed friend. Exquisitely shot and boldly revealing, Verseau’s film observes our physical world — the spaces we inhabit and the objects that tell our stories — in an attempt to understand her own experience.
With raw human complexity, Trans Memoria also explores the nature of non-fiction filmmaking, the narratives we tell about ourselves, and how we observe the stories of others. Verseau dives into her past with humane conviction and a willingness to share her trials in order to find a communal future that overcomes hardship. What results is a conversation-starting documentary/diary about the self and a community of trans women, with frank discussion and thorny questions underscoring its soulful sensory experience.
