Featuring Dylan O’Brien in his best role(s) to date, Twinless finds a charming odd couple pairing between straight Roman and gay Dennis — two men who meet at a support group for people who have lost their twin. A double prize winner at Sundance, James Sweeney's sophomore feature achieves a high-wire balancing act of laugh-out-loud comedy and gut-punching sadness, with filmmaking and storytelling sophistication to boot.
As in his debut feature Straight Up, which had its world premiere at Frameline43, Sweeney displays a knack not just for smart, dizzying repartee but for capturing unconventional, thorny relationships that we don’t often see in cinema — somewhat unlikely gay/straight pairings that exist somewhere beyond friendship but outside of romance and sex. With notable supporting turns from Lauren Graham, François Arnaud (also seen in Fucktoys at Frameline49), Tasha Smith, and Aisling Franciosi in particular as Dennis’ coworker/possible ally/potential foil Marcie, Twinless cements Sweeney as one of queer cinema’s most promising young directors and O’Brien as a fearless acting force of nature.
